Acts 2:42 Men’s Fellowship
“When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?’” Luke 24:30-32 NIV
Last week we began our discussion on the great commission and ultimately God’s purpose for our lives. And we discovered together how each one of us can play such an important role in making an impact for Christ. For the mission each one of us has been given from God is tailored perfectly to who we are. How exciting it is to be on mission and to be living the life He desires for each one of us.
But I know this is not the case for many people because I am the first person to admit how easy to fall into a life that is not on mission. For it is easy to fall to sin and live a life contrary to what God desires. The god of this age has blinded each one of us from seeing God’s glory in Christ (2 Corinthians 4:4). Therefore it should be of no surprise why the burning desire to live a life on mission does not come from within our own lives for we are not capable of seeing through a blinded eye.
God has presented us a remedy to this problem (2 Corinthians 4:6) and has shown to each one of us how to have this burning desire to live a life on mission. And much of His insight on how He works in each one of us comes from the passage of Luke shared at the beginning of the message.
For I find this story very interesting because of what the two disciples mention when Christ disappears from their sight. They just shared a meal with Christ and their eyes were opened when He disappears. Would that not cause your heart to burn? When your dinner guest miraculously disappears, would that not get you excited to know you were sitting with the risen Lord?
But this is not what they cite as their reason for their heart to burn. Instead they mention, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while He talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?’ They cited a moment which occurred prior to this miraculous disappearance when they were on the road to Emmaus.
I find this very insightful because something special evidently happened when they were on the road to Emmaus. Something so profound that caused the disciples to reference their time with Christ on the road to Emmaus, not His miraculous disappearance or their meal shared with the risen Lord.
When you study the scriptures you will notice that two things happened: (1) Christ walked with them on the road to Emmaus and (2) shared the scriptures with them (Luke 24:25-27). Two very simple things.
From this I believe these two disciples recognized where the burning desire to stay on mission comes from. It is not from miraculous signs or even inviting Christ into your home. The burning desire within your heart to stay on mission comes from spending time with Christ on the road of life and reading the scriptures. This is the key to staying on mission.
God presented us with a similar roadmap at the beginning of the book of Psalms upon where it is written:
“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.” Psalm 1:1-2 NIV
Here God says find counsel with Him and delight in the scriptures continuously day and night. It is the same two principles which was shared to the disciples on the road to Emmaus.
Brothers, I believe we need to surrender ourselves and learn from the lesson these two disciples on the road to Emmaus shares. We can do nothing on our own to cause our heart to burn for Him. Yet when we walk with Christ daily (or find counsel with Him) and study the scriptures, our heart will be stirred and burn for Him with a fire that cannot be put out by the powers of this world.
This is a life on mission and this is the life God desires for each one of us. Join me on mission as we walk the road together…

Weekly Message / Prayer Request
Acts 2:42 Men’s Fellowship
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:19-20 NIV
As we move past the Easter celebration, let us look toward the future with all joy and hope. For Jesus Christ our Savior has defeated death by rising from the grave on the third day two thousand years ago. No longer does sin separate us from God, for our debt has been paid in full. We who believe are now a new creation in Christ…
So there is certainly good news to share!! This is the great commission that has been given to each one of us. We are called to go out into the world and make disciples by sharing the good news. And the work is not ours; it is accomplished only by the Holy Spirit. Our calling is to share and teach the good news and allow the Lord to make the increase (1 Corinthians 3:6).
Therefore the season ahead is exciting. There are many places the Lord may lead us to. And it may be within our own Church on any given Sunday. Many people walk through the doors of Northshore on a Sunday morning who are there for the first time. Many of these people may not know Christ but are there because of the calling from God’s mighty hand of providence.
My prayer is that we may be able to find these moments and make a connection with those who need to hear the Word of God. When we are able to plant a seed, water it through our love, this allows the Lord to be able to make it grow.
And the news we share carries to the end of the earth. For the whisper of His voice can be heard through the testimony of each one of us. For it is written in the book of Romans:
“But I ask: Did they not hear? Of course they did: ‘Their voice has gone out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.’” Romans 10:18 NIV
Let us know that each one of us makes a difference through our testimony. Even when it does not seem like we are making an impact, let us remember His voice and know that He speaks through each one of us. By allowing God to work through us, His revelation will be carried unto the ends of the earth…

David – pray that the Lord will continue to give him the right heart in every situation
Mark – pray that I will be able to shepherd others with the love of Christ, pray that I will be able to live completely by truth, not dominated with feelings

Weekly Message / Prayer Request
Acts 2:42 Men’s Ministry
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.” Zechariah 9:9 NKJV
Palm Sunday celebrates the beginning of the most important week of human history. This week, two thousand years ago, culminated with the greatest gift all of us can ever receive—eternal life with our heavenly Father. All which is required of us in order to receive this gift is accept Christ into our lives…
But as we begin to approach the cross with utmost prayer and reverence, let us look back to the beginning when Christ made his entry into Jerusalem.
It was a moment of glorious triumph and the restoration of so much hope for the Jewish people. For ever since King David, the Jews were waiting for someone to come from the line of David to restore the kingdom to all of its previous glory (cf. 2 Samuel 7; 1 Chronicles 17).
This is why Jesus was so highly exalted in his entry into Jerusalem (Matthew 21). In fact, most Jews thought the king has finally come home to reign and establish his kingdom once and for all. They thought at last they would be able to rid themselves of the ruthless Romans and be free of the bondage scourged on Jewish populous.
For everything seemed perfect and looked to happen exactly how the prophet Zechariah foretold in the above passage five hundred years prior. A passage the Jews would have certainly been familiar with. Therefore Christ’s entrance into the city happened exactly how it was foretold…
From this passage in Zechariah we can discern four distinct qualities of Messiah’s character: (1) He is King; (2) He is just; (3) He brings salvation; and (4) He is humble. These four qualities is how He entered the city of Jerusalem on that day two thousand years ago; the same qualities He will return with on the Day of Judgment at some time from now; and is the same qualities He is today.
Because of these four qualities, our celebration should begin at once and never end until each one of us is called home. For He rules over everything we face daily; for He is our advocate in the heavens; for He gives each one of us eternal life with the Father; and He is humble to come before any who calls. This is our reason for celebration…
This should not be the end either. We should only consider this the beginning because Paul clearly speaks about those who accept Christ and the great things which are in store for all who believe:
“And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:18 NIV
We are being transformed into His likeness with ever-increasing glory! This is exciting news because God is working with our lives, molding us in different ways, in order that we may be refined into the plan God has so predestined us to become.
Therefore let us celebrate Christ together this week, all the way from His entrance into Jerusalem, to His Last Supper with the disciples, to His death on the Cross, and to His glorious resurrection. For what Christ gave us this week two thousand years ago is truly everything…
My prayer is that all of us will be able to share the passion of this week together and we may be able to see the unity upon which we all share…

Weekly Message / Prayer Request
Acts 2:42 Men’s Fellowship
“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24-25 NIV
For the past five weeks we have looked into the deep meaning of love in each one our weekly messages. We first asked each other what is our first love? Then we proceeded to discuss what perfect love is and where does it come from. The following week we spoke about how we tap into this perfect love. Then just last week we spoke about how much love this really is—an immeasurable amount of love. It has been very exciting to see how we have proceeded in this journey and where the Lord has directed our thoughts and prayers on the matter of love…
But our work is not finished until we discuss how to share this love with others. We have focused much of our attention on what has been poured into our hearts. Now let us look at what is poured out when we share life together…
The writer of Hebrews shares with us this great passage on meeting together. He makes it clear that our fellowship is not a passive act and never was intended to be a moment steered by apathy or a sense of duty. Everything mentioned here is action by believers; an act upon where people are reaching into the lives of others.
This is seen by the phrase ‘spur one another on toward love and good deeds’. The writer uses the Greek word paroxusmos (παροξυσμὸν) here which literally means ‘contention or provoke unto’. This is significant because it is almost like the writer is calling us to intentionally bump heads with our brothers to provoke something. In fact the word paroxusmos is only used one other time in the New Testament, in Acts 15:39 where it is written: “They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus…” A contention so great that Barnabas left Paul to go a different way… So the word used is definitely an action word, not one which is passive in nature.
When we consider this you may think that we are to be pushy and intentionally pry ourselves into the lives of others. But this can be no farther from the truth. Everything we do is to be done in love. Pushing our way into someone else’s life does not demonstrate a loving nature and therefore does not demonstrate the perfect love God has given us.
Instead I believe what the writer of Hebrews is asking each one of us to do is position ourselves within the ‘body of Christ’ where we can encourage one another and spur others to do great things. It is a positional standing the writer is trying to address here within the fellowship, not a particular act.
See we can withdrawal from one another even in a crowded room. We can withdrawal from a conversation to where nothing provokes us to ask any questions about our brother’s condition. Figuratively sit in the back of the room and never hear the pain which is being shared within the lives of our brothers… This is what I believe the writer of Hebrews is trying to warn us from becoming.
This positional standing is probably best witnessed within the book of Exodus where Moses has a chance to see the glory of the Lord:
“Then the LORD said, ‘There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.’” Exodus 33:21-23 NIV
God positioned Moses on a rock in the right place upon where Moses could see the glory of God without seeing His face directly. It is a great example upon where someone is positioned perfectly. And there is a great lesson to learn from this.
See to love someone is to be positioned in the right place. It is about taking ourselves and putting our life before others in such a way that we can share the good news and be there in a time of need. This is positional standing with perfect love from God as its source.
Brothers, may we place our lives within the ‘body of Christ’ in such a way upon where we can be used by Him in order to love others. This is my prayer for each one of us, our fellowship, and Northshore Christian Church. Through our positional standing next to each other, within the ‘body of Christ’, and within the community of Everett, may we find ourselves in the place God designed and find our lives at the center of His will…
May our love flow into the lives of others…

Tim – praise God for allowing him to hear a quote from an anonymous sage that “the most blissful state here on earth is much closer to hell then what heaven will be like for those who believe”
Kelcy – praise God for allowing him to spend a great weekend with his wife celebrating his anniversary
Ramon – praise God for continuing to bless him with work, praise God for an opportunity to play some golf and get some time away from the daily stress
Mark – praise God that he continues to reveal himself more and more each day through the Word
Dick – praise God for some recent success at work
Each week we want to celebrate everything God has done in our lives and the life of the Church. Therefore join us and share with us all the amazing things He has done…

Weekly Message/ Prayer Request
Acts 2:42 Men’s Fellowship
“In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: ‘Do not fear; Zion, let not your hands be weak. The Lord your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.’” Zephaniah 3:16-17 NKJV
Zephaniah was a prophet during very turbulent times in Judah. It was a time of political upheaval as the imminent transfer of Assyrian world power to the Babylonians was beginning to take shape. An element of independence was beginning to reveal itself in Judah as King Josiah took over from a four decade rule from King Manasseh. So the time was right for a revival and dramatic reforms and therefore people were very hopeful for the future.
Yet, Zephaniah’s message was not one of celebration. Instead the message brought forth was about how the ‘day of the Lord’ was quickly approaching. The people were to ready themselves for the divine judgment which was about to take place at the hands of the Babylonians. People were called to prepare themselves for a day of wrath, trouble, distress, devastation, desolation, darkness, gloominess, clouds, thick darkness, trumpet, and alarm ( see Zephaniah 1:15,16,18).
In many ways I feel this message is very timely to our day. Throughout the world much political upheaval is taking place with various reforms beginning to take shape. This is leading to many people experiencing hope for the future. But like Zephaniah, I believe our focus should not be on any political situation and therefore rest in any worldly hope. Instead we must stay focused on preparing for the ‘day of the Lord’ because it is quickly approaching.
And we must always remember, that even during the height of the storm ‘the Lord your God is in your midst’ and that ‘The Mighty One will save’. Nothing should distract us from seeing the message the gospel shares with us. For God is faithful and truly loves all of us.
How much does God love us? One only has to consider the statement mentioned at the beginning where Zephaniah said ‘He will quiet you with His love’. This is an immeasurable amount of love that He has for us. There is no way to even quantify how much love this is.
This love is so great that (1) it will show us that we are loved to such an extent that we will desire nothing, truly nothing else, ceasing us to ask for anything because we will have everything; (2) it will cause us to be so amazed at the depth, width, and strength of His love that it will result in the utterance of no words. This is the love of a thousand suns.
As believers, we live under the mighty hand of God by His love. Nothing in this world can separate us from this love (see Romans 8:35). For even during the fire that all of us face on this side of eternity, God’s truth rings forth and will be the steadying hand there to keep our course straight.
Let us look at the words of God in Psalm 91:
“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation.” Psalm 91:14-16 NKJV
Therefore this message is not just about ‘the day of the Lord’; this message is one of love. For God cares for all of us with such an immeasurable amount of love that He will rescue any one of us from any situation we find ourselves in. No trouble in this world can prevent Him from finding us. Therefore as the Psalmist said, all we have to do is set our love upon Him.
My prayer is that all of us begin to see His love in our lives and set our love upon Him. I pray that all of us will see this saving grace and come to know Jesus Christ. His fingerprints are everywhere in the providence of life. Nothing escapes His sight, therefore we should never fear.
May God continue to bless all of you this coming week. I look forward to sharing more time with you as we continue to share life together…
