Acts 2:42 Men’s Ministry
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.” Zechariah 9:9 NKJV
Palm Sunday celebrates the beginning of the most important week of human history. This week, two thousand years ago, culminated with the greatest gift all of us can ever receive—eternal life with our heavenly Father. All which is required of us in order to receive this gift is accept Christ into our lives…
But as we begin to approach the cross with utmost prayer and reverence, let us look back to the beginning when Christ made his entry into Jerusalem.
It was a moment of glorious triumph and the restoration of so much hope for the Jewish people. For ever since King David, the Jews were waiting for someone to come from the line of David to restore the kingdom to all of its previous glory (cf. 2 Samuel 7; 1 Chronicles 17).
This is why Jesus was so highly exalted in his entry into Jerusalem (Matthew 21). In fact, most Jews thought the king has finally come home to reign and establish his kingdom once and for all. They thought at last they would be able to rid themselves of the ruthless Romans and be free of the bondage scourged on Jewish populous.
For everything seemed perfect and looked to happen exactly how the prophet Zechariah foretold in the above passage five hundred years prior. A passage the Jews would have certainly been familiar with. Therefore Christ’s entrance into the city happened exactly how it was foretold…
From this passage in Zechariah we can discern four distinct qualities of Messiah’s character: (1) He is King; (2) He is just; (3) He brings salvation; and (4) He is humble. These four qualities is how He entered the city of Jerusalem on that day two thousand years ago; the same qualities He will return with on the Day of Judgment at some time from now; and is the same qualities He is today.
Because of these four qualities, our celebration should begin at once and never end until each one of us is called home. For He rules over everything we face daily; for He is our advocate in the heavens; for He gives each one of us eternal life with the Father; and He is humble to come before any who calls. This is our reason for celebration…
This should not be the end either. We should only consider this the beginning because Paul clearly speaks about those who accept Christ and the great things which are in store for all who believe:
“And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:18 NIV
We are being transformed into His likeness with ever-increasing glory! This is exciting news because God is working with our lives, molding us in different ways, in order that we may be refined into the plan God has so predestined us to become.
Therefore let us celebrate Christ together this week, all the way from His entrance into Jerusalem, to His Last Supper with the disciples, to His death on the Cross, and to His glorious resurrection. For what Christ gave us this week two thousand years ago is truly everything…
My prayer is that all of us will be able to share the passion of this week together and we may be able to see the unity upon which we all share…
